നടുവിൽ..... എന്റെ ജനനത്തിനും പത്തു വയസ്സുവരെയുള്ള വളർച്ചക്കും സാക്ഷിയായ നാട്. പിന്നീട് ഞാൻ നാടുവിലിൽ സ്ഥിരമായി താമസിച്ചല്ലെങ്കിലും നാടുവിലുമായി തുടർന്ന് ബന്ധമുണ്ടായിരുന്നു, നാളിതുവരെ. ഒരുപാട് ഓർമ്മകൾ എനിക്ക് എന്റെ ജന്മനാടിനെപ്പറ്റി ഉണ്ട്. പ്രത്യേകിച്ചും അച്ചപ്പൻ (എം സി കേളപ്പൻ നമ്പ്യാർ ) എന്ന മഹാവൃക്ഷത്തിന്റെ തണലിൽ ഉണ്ടായിരുന്ന ജീവിതത്തെപ്പറ്റി.

This i an excellent idea. I still have Chandran velyachan's sketch of the school area saved. I think MCK family can write an excellent history of Naduvil in the 20th century like nobody else in the region can. I had mentioned this to Sreedharan velyachan once and he was excited about the prospects too. I'll be delighted to help compile it, once we have something solid! :)

Yes they are relatives. On that day Patteri Ambutty brought the liquor. On that day Ragava poduval was the guest.
Ammechans gun is with Unni maman .

Velyachan do you remember more about this incident?
One of achappan's closest friends was Chaveela Abdulla Haji who lived near to Puthiya veedu(our ancestral house).  There were only two Hajees in Naduvil circle during 50s. The other one was Kadungaan Hajee,  the businessman. An old Chaverlet van used to run single trip from  Naduvil to Taliparamba,  leaving Naduvil by 8 am and returning from Taliparamba market place at 5pm. Inside of van (except front seat which is reserved for achappan and/or Chaveela Haji) usually would be filled with sacks of pepper, cashew, etc.  and all passengers have to hang on the outside of the van including bonnet.
Are the Hajee families still in Naduvil?
Yes,  Harimon..... very much. These are beyond I can write on this page.

Bank ? How money used to get to people ?
No,  there was a renowned vaidyar,  named as Kalikkodan vaidyar. He used to treat for all sorts of illnesses. He was treating our achamma also for her paralysis illness. He used to prepare medicines at our house.  For this, achappan installed lots of equipment and chucks(for extracting oil from seeds) in the "olakkodu" and  north verandah of our house. I still remember people working though I was only 3 years old then.
Another one was "thaadikaran vaidyar" (Kunhiraman vaidyar) who stayed in the east side of Bhagavathi temple.
Ration shop was very prevalent during early 50s. Kalloor eleppan came to Naduvil as a ration shop manager in 1951 or so and later got married to Saradechi through arranged marriage.
Bank? There was nothing like a bank in Naduvil those days. In fact, usage lf solid currency was very rare. Wages were given in the form of "nellu" for workers. If I remember correctly, first bank was  "ഐക്യനാണയസംഘം " established in 1957.

Nalini is right.Most of the marriages  known as "Pudava kodukkal " were at night. The bridegroom and party used to stay in bride's house and would leave next day morning. Today's "Salkaram" was known as "Vettilakkettu" where bride's relatives/friends used to visit bridegroom's house. It could be many miles of walking by both parties to reach the respective houses.

Coins were in use as early as 18th century in India. But in remote places like Naduvil, it was very rarely used.
Lowest coin - 1 kaasu
3 kaasu - 1 kaalana(quarter anna)
6 kaasu - 1/2 anna (half anna)
16 anna - 1 rupee
1 rupee was a big money then. You could buy provisions for 1 week for a 4  member family with 1 rupee.

Dear all,
I like to share the enchanting experience we had during
Onam vacation during childhood. I remember the barren rocks of 'Kizhakkeppara' was swathed in dazzling blue  kakkapoo , a panoramic landscape created by God. The scintillating view of flowers like an ocean was an a dumbfounded experience. Plucking these flowers drenching ourselves in the incessant rain is still vividly  cherished in  memories.
I think this open space once  supported the blue wonders of nature  Naduvilites spend their evenings , perhaps a non entity now due to ill planned and unplanned so called 'development'.
While taking the the krishapoo even the rain and wind had not bothered.Now feel that mood like meditation. Thinking of nothing else.
This was foot ball ground
One end west was valiyettan (PTK)
Other end east was Balettan’s land - house was not made I think - all said once it was government / nss / open land -
Now filled with office - Khasi - temple - many houses
The football ground was erstwhile a cricket ground also. When I was a teacher in Vyasa college I got cricket kit brought to Naduvil and distributed to cricket players. Vijayan staying near  Naliniyechi's house was a nice batsman.
Water spring and clean water used to flow in the ground and all collected used to be a nice stream down in front of valiyettan’s house
Same was the water flow in the spring at rubber plantation at perunji  where I remember once had earth quake too !
my earliest memory related to naduvil is at puthiyaveedu. Achappan, achan, kalloor eleppan and some others were having a grand "party" at upstairs poomugham. I was playing near the stairs. Achan asked me to bring a glass from the kitchen. I was 6or7 years old. Just imagine having to go to kitchen through the dark cavernlike rooms. There was no electricity at that time there. I made a blind dash and ended up somewhere in the room near the kitchen with a big lump on my forehead  . 😃
Yes it was horrendous experience to go from one room to other when we were children.
Puthiyaveedu  upstair was a spacious lighted place unlike all other room !!
Same was my fascination for the round table around the pillar !!
There was a well in Balettan's land. In rainy season, water will come up &we used to jump into the well😂

Very  interesting indeed ! These are all news to me hearing from my younger brothers and sisters.
I would concentrate on introducing many more characters of Naduvil with whom I had contact during  my young age. Some of you, I am sure,  may be knowing them.
Kelu Panikkar, the Gulikan theyyam expert of Arakkal kottam was a phenomenon. He was a very dedicated theyyam artist.
We (Sreedharan and me) used to wonder how he could travel to Taliparamba wearing only a mundu (മുണ്ട് ).
He also used to do MANTHRA to treat people

mundu used to have the madithattru - folded well and he keeps some item safe inside !! - I used to wonder - what is inside - one KNIFE always !!

How many of you know Raghavan (better known as
" Thondan Raghavan" ?
Raghavan appeared in Naduvil sometime during 1954. We came to know that he was from Kadamberi.  On  every trip to Naduvil he used to stay for 5-6 months and disappear.  He had no family  of his own.
He was a wanderer.
He used to help in household jobs like pulling water from well,  griding rice in "Aattammi", cutting wood,  etc. When he was in Naduvil, we, the children,  used to play with him. We learned from him how to touch nose with our tongue. His nose was very long and he could easily do it,  but not so easy for us.
He is expert in making bed& pillow using cotton

We could give order and during the unnakkai season he makes it - may be hand stitching skill is part of theyyam !!

Pokkan was an inevitable part of our family machinery those days. Early morning we used to run to "Aala" with a small pot to collect milk for morning tea.There were about 25 over cows in the aala and at any time of the year,  3 to 5 cows were giving milk.
Latet Pokkan would bring full supply of milk in big bamboo containers. Milk was boiled in big mud 'kalam". After having breakfast, Pokkan would carry his lunch and would take the cows to "kizhakke parambu" for feeding grass. He would be back only by about 5 pm.
traditional ala had red stone laterite and so with Chanakam (cow dung) used to be wet with cow urine and as cow moves around used to get spill of the mix on to us as we enter inside !!

mostly the play used to be keeping shops and balance weighing is done using coconut shell with a rope hanging

Pocken for us was school peon and was old black and bit balled and always smiling - with Paru in the kitchen to make the UPMA out of the American ration wheat rave in Dalda - that was so tasty and good smell !!
I heard this rave was given to us and India used to give Printed books back in return to USA - these books are all shelfed in many libraries in USA (most of them are not available in India)

Amma told me that Pokkan was brought to kakkopram house by his mother. He was only 14 years old then. Achappan employed him as house helper and later as cowboy. He was given a piece of land near school and a small house was also constructed for him. Achappan was kind enough to even arrange the marriage of Pokkan with Paaru and later employed him as school peon.

Good to hear Raghavettan's old and golden memories.
It is hard to believe that the person in the photo is raghavettan. His looks have changed very much. But the cut on his right pointing finger made me believe it is raghavettan. For sreedharan and myself, raghavettan was  a mentor and caretaker. Raghavettan was all-in-all at puthiya veedu. You could hear people calling for raghavettan from all over the house for various jobs.

The first movie we saw was with raghavettan. It was in 1954,  the Malayalam movie was "Snehaseema" ( Sathyan and Padmini starrer movie).  We went for Trichambaram ulsavam and saw the movie at "Sunlight Talkies" (in the same location where Alankar talkies came later).
When I was studying in 5th St..one day when I was plucking cashews the pole stuck in my eye and began bleeding. Amma took me& run to Puthiya veedu .Raghavetten took me on his shoulder up to thettunna road (12km) caught a van to Taliparamba for treatment. 🙏🙏🙏

Raghavettan as I remember at  my young age..
Raghavettan was very special in all aspects. I remember him studying for his ESLC ( today's 8th class) by postal tution at home and  later for SSLC too. Through all the household jobs and urgent assignments given by achappan, he found time for learning, which, otherwise he could never have achieved. He was determined to suceed in life and he did to a great extent.

Yes,  raghavettan obtained his driving license. This photo given in the license was in 1967,  much later than my acquaintance with  raghavettan during the 1950s.

Kesavan mash was mentioning about Sarvath Mammu. Sarvath was the main wholesale trader who used to buy spices, rubber, etc. from Naduvil and nearby placed. He was a close friend of MCK Nambiar and used to visit puthiya veedu very often during spice harvest days with his younger brother Abubacker. They had a big shop cum godown in market  place, Taliparamba. This shop was a resting/waiting place for MCK Nbr and kins.

Sarvath Brothers Bus-ൻടെ ഉടമയാണോ ?
The first bus towards our route was Indira Motors which made its service between Taliparamba and Chapparappadav. If I remember correctly, it was in 1957. Next came Sarvath Brothers bus from Taliparamba upto Oduvallithattu in 1958. Later this was extended to Naduvil for some time.
Though there are some mistakes

Also Nayanar was not Janmi
Initially, I was mentioning about Karakkattidathil Unnamman Nayanar with whom achappan had a long legal fight about the ownership of Vellad dewaswam and temple. Finally, MCK Nbr won the case. To celebrate the victory, he replaced the tiles of Shreekovil of the temple with Copper plates.
PT K mostly used to mention his dealings - I remember this name
Cheppilattu was MCK's mother's house. He moved to Kakkepram house,  his father's ancestor property. Kunhechi (Sreedevi) was born in this house. After construction of Puthiya veedu in 1941,  kakkepram house was given to his half brother,   Rayarappan achappan.

The van getting ready in the evening for its trip to Naduvil. On left side is the godown for the spices and hill products. Far behind is Juma Masjid,  the first masjid in Taliparamba. It is still existing. The small shed   in between is the muslim barber shop. Except few,  most of the muslim males used to shave their heads those days.

Karakkattidathil Nayanars originated from Ellarinji,  about 10 kms south east of Sreekantapuram. The descendants are still there. Valiya Unnamman Nayanar was the last "Karanavar" before the land reformation bill got passed by Kerala Govt in 1959. It was the end of  "janmi - kudiyan" social structure.
As pappan mentioned,  Madayan Cheppilattu,  Pappinisseri and Pullaikkodi were all prominent Nair families of North Malabar. Alongside,  Koodali Thazhath and Kallyaad Thazhath were in fact ruling families even since Pazhassi rule time. All these families were  once "Samanthas" of Chirakkal king and were empowered with rights of maintaining law and order of their respective land limits before  British rule.
I was told that Achappan's maternal great uncle was the leader of Nair army under Chirakkal king.

I listned to Karunakarettan's narrative. There are some new information for me like  trading of "pulthailam",  purchase of buses, Narayanelechan's (Manjheri)  history, etc.
In the end,  he mentioned that I told about the first car in Taliparamba.  It was Raghavettan who told about that,  not me. I knew it was Nayanar vakkeel who owned the first car in Taliparamba. Next car was owned by the court Magistrate, if I remember.

Who is MCK' father & mother? Where was their ancestors place.
Initially, Komath Kunhiraman was the only document writer in Taliparamba. His outlet was near to the old Sub Registrar's office,  two shops north of SRO.
Komath was a close friend of MCK. They had a very close relationship as there were several land purchases and sales done by MCK often. Komath's shop was used as a waiting room by all our family members during traveling.
No idea..... nobody ever told about that. I heard MCK's ancestors came to Naduvil from Chirakkal.

I remember waiting for hours at taliparamba for naduvil bus, and going to bharathi hotel for dosa & tea. It seemed an eternity  to reach naduvil. Once there, it was a totally new experience. Walking to thikkal veedu, ambalam, puthenveedu, kakkoprath..

Amma used to say several stories about Amma’s achamma......Our great grand mother was a majestic royal lady in Amma’s words.
The Achamma was fully or close to fully blind, I gathered from the stories told by Amma. The one was,she accidentally wrapped Ramasettan in the paya when he was an infant and no one noticed that for a long time.
That Achamma was not our grandmother.

Yes,  I remember the incident clearly. We searched for the baby  Ramadasan for long time. Finally somebody found  the rolled "paaya" and there in  was Ramadasan, still sleeping.
Kunjhathi achamma was very fair and tall. She lived upto 94 years.  On Ekadasi days,  she used to cook her food herself separately.

തവരുൾ പുതിയടത്തെ അടുത്ത അവകാശി കല്യാണി, വിദ്യാഭ്യാസം ഉള്ള ഒരേഒരു സ്ത്രീ. പകുതി യുടെ അവകാശി. ഇവരുടെ അമ്മയുടെ സഹോദരി യുടെ പുത്രി മാർ ആകുന്നു ആദ്യം പറഞ്ഞ സഹോദരിമാർ. ഐതിഹ്യ പ്രകാരം ഇവീട്ടിലെ ഒരു സ്ത്രീ ശിവ ഗണ ത്തിലെ ഒരു പുരുഷനുമായി പ്രണയത്തിലായി, അവർ ഗർഭിണിയായി. പ്രസവമടുത്തപ്പോൾ സ്ത്രീയെ ഭൂമിയിൽ ആക്കി  പോയെ പറ്റു. അങ്ങിനെ അവരെയുംകൊണ്ട് നടന്നു നമ്മുടെ ആരൂഢ സ്ഥലത്തു വന്നു. അപ്പോൾ  shivaganam …

ഞാൻ ആറാം ക്ലാസ്സിൽ പഠിക്കുമ്പോൾ (1956) ഒതേനമ്മോന്റെ കൂടെ തവരൂൽ മേലായി വീട്ടിൽ പോയി ഒരാഴ്ച്ച താമസിച്ചത് ഓർക്കുന്നു. വളക്കൈ വഴി നടന്നാണ് പോയത്. അന്ന് റോഡ് ഇല്ല, ഇടവഴിയിൽകൂടിയും വയൽ വരമ്പത്തുവഴിയും ഒരുപാട് നടന്നാണ് മേലായി വീട്ടിൽ എത്തിയത്.

എനിക്ക് MCK Nbrഉടെ അടുത്ത ബന്ധുക്കളെ അധികമൊന്നും അറിയില്ലായിരുന്നു. അനുജനായ രയരപ്പൻ (ഒരേ അമ്മ, അച്ഛൻ വേറെ ) അച്ചപ്പനെ എപ്പോഴും കാണാറുള്ളതുകൊണ്ട് നന്നായി അറിയാം.
പിന്നെ അറിഞ്ഞിരുന്നത് കൊയിറ്റി കൃഷ്ണൻ നമ്പ്യാരെ  ആയിരുന്നു. ഇദ്ദേഹം MCK യുടെ മരുമകളുടെ ഭർത്താവായിരുന്നു. പലപ്പോഴും പുതിയ വീട്ടിൽ വന്നു കുറച്ചു ദിവസങ്ങൾ താമസിച്ചിട്ട് പോകുമായിരുന്നു. നന്നായി ഭാഗവതം വായിക്കുമായിരുന്നു. പിന്നെ മഷിനോട്ടവും അറിയുന്ന ആളാണെന്നു കേട്ടിരുന്നു. എപ്പോഴും ബീഡി വലിക്കുകയും ഉച്ചത്തിൽ ചുമക്കുകയും ചെയ്യുമായിരുന്നു.

അച്ചപ്പന് നേരെ സഹോദരിമാരില്ല. കോയിറ്റി യുടെ ഭാര്യ  അകന്ന ബന്ധത്തിലുള്ള താണ് അനുജന്മാർ രണ്ടായിരുന്നു MCK യുടെ.  നേരെഇളയ ആളുടെ മൂന്നു മക്കൾ മൂത്തയാൾ  തിക്കൽ വീട്ടിൽ കണ്ണൻ നമ്പ്യാർ (പേര് മാറിയോ എന്നുസംശയം )രണ്ടാമത്തേത് കുട്ടിയപ്പ അമ്മാവന്റെ ഭാര്യ dachu, 3അതു TVPadmanabhan, postman. ഇളയ സഹോദരൻ MCR അവർക്കു രണ്ടു പെണ്ണും ഒരാണും, MCR ന്റെ  ഭാര്യ  ചെറുകുന്ന് ഇടവങ്കാര കടാങ്കോട്(നേരത്തെ പറഞ്ഞ  T P  നാരായണൻ നമ്പ്യാരുടെ ഭാര്യയുടെ അനുജത്തി )പണ്ട് കഥപറയുന്നത് ചെറുകുന്ന്കാര് നടുവിൽ വന്നുപോകുമ്പോൾ ആവണ കിന്റെ  കുരു കൊണ്ടുപോകും, അതേപോലെ നാടുവിൽക്കാർ ചെറുകുന്നിൽപോയാൽ തേങ്ങാകൊണ്ടുവരും. ആവണ കിന്റെ കുറുപുഴുങ്ങി വെള്ളം ഉപയോഗിക്കും , മറ്റേവർ തേങ്ങ ചിരട്ടയോടെ പുഴുങ്ങി വെള്ളം കുടിക്കും.രണ്ടുകൂട്ടർക്കും ഉപയോഗം അറിയില്ല. എത്ര അടുത്ത ബന്ധുക്കൾ  ചെറുകുന്നിൽ പോയാൽ പറയത്രേ അമ്പലത്തിലെ പന്തലിൽ കാണാമെന്നു. അതായതു ഒരു ഗ്ലാസ്‌ വെള്ളംപോലും നഷ്ടമാവരുത്

അപ്പൂപ്പന്  gസഹോദരങ്ങൾ രണ്ടേയുള്ളു. കോയിടിയുടെ ഭാര്യ മരുമകളായിരുന്നു. അവർ എംസി കുടുബം ആണ് എന്നാണെന്റെ ഓർമ. ഇപ്പോൾ മറവിയുണ്ടെന്നു തോന്നുന്നു
കൊയിറ്റി കിട്ടേളേപ്പന്റെ ഭാര്യ അച്ചപ്പന്റെ അകന്ന ബന്ധത്തിലെ മരുമകൾ തന്നെയായിരുന്നു. അവരുടെ പേര് ലക്ഷ്മി എന്നോമറ്റോ ആയിരുന്നു. അമ്മ പറഞ്ഞു കേട്ടിട്ടുണ്ട്.
നടുവിൽ പുതിയ വീടിനു മാത്രമുള്ള   ചില വിശേഷതകളുണ്ട്. വിഷുദിനത്തിലും ഓണദിവസവും ഒരുപടി ആൾകാർ കാഴ്ച വസ്തുക്കൾ കൊണ്ടുവരും. Vishu ദിവസം വരുന്ന എല്ലാവരുടെയും പേരെഴുതി സൂക്ഷിക്കും. അവർക്കെല്ലാം ഓണം നാളിൽ കോടി മുണ്ടുകൊടുക്കണം. ഓണത്തിന് വരുന്ന കരിമ്പാലരും മാവിലാറും അവിൽ കൊണ്ടുവരും. ഇതു ചിലപ്പോൾ  അഞ്ചു പറ  വരെ കാണും. അതു വൈക്കോൽ പുല്ലിൽ പൊതിഞ്ഞു സൂക്ഷിക്കും. പിന്നീട് ഉപ്പുമാവിനും ശർക്കര തേങ്ങ ചേർത്ത കുഴച്ചു വിശിഷ്ട ഭക്ഷണമാക്കി ഉപയോഗിക്കും. ഈ പൊതി വീട്ടിന്റെ മൂന്നാം നിലയിൽ (thattinpuram) സൂക്ഷിക്കും, ഇതിൽ കയറാൻ രണ്ടുപേർ ഒന്ന് ഞാൻ പിന്നെ ഭാർഗവി എച്ചി. പലദിവസങ്ങളിലും ഞങ്ങൾ വെല്ലവും തേങ്ങയുമായി തട്ടിന്പുറത്തു കയറി ആവശ്യത്തിന് കഴിച്ചു തിരികെ വരും. ഇതു ചിലപ്പോൾ ആദ്യമായിട്ട്  പുറം ലോകം അറിയുന്നതായിരിക്കും ചിലപ്പോൾ TPN  വീട്ടിലുള്ളപ്പോൾ ഞങ്ങൾ ഇതു പോലെ ചെയ്യും

"മാക്കറി " (ഒരു തരം പായസം ) പുതിയ വീട്ടിൽ കൊടുക്കുമായിരുന്നു. ഇറയത്തും മുറ്റത്തുമായി എല്ലാവരെയും ഇരുത്തി ഇലയിൽ ആണ് കൊടുക്കാറ്.
നമ്മളൊക്കെ ചെറുപ്പത്തിൽ പിറന്നാളിന് അമ്മയും "മാക്കറി " പായസം ഉണ്ടാക്കിയിരുന്നു
രാഘവേട്ടൻ പറഞ്ഞ കാര്യങ്ങൾ എനിക്ക് നല്ല ഓമ്മയുണ്ട്. മാപ്പീളമാര് പഞ്ചസാരയും കൊണ്ടുവരും. എനിക്കും നല്ല മുണ്ട് തരും
പലവലുപ്പത്തിലും പലനിറത്തിലും  കരകളുള്ള മുണ്ടുകൾ അട്ടിഅട്ടിയായി പുതിയവീട്ടിലെ പൂമുഖത്ത് അടുക്കിവെച്ചത്  എനിക്കും ഓർമ്മയുണ്ട്.
ഓണമായ അന്ന് എനിക്ക് കിട്ടിയ മുണ്ട് കുറച്ചു വലുതായതു കൊണ്ട് ഞാൻ ശഠിച്ചു കരഞ്ഞതുകൊണ്ടു അച്ഛൻ എനിക്കു പറ്റിയ നല്ല കരയുള്ള മുണ്ട് വാങ്ങി കൊണ്ടുവന്നു തന്നു. അന്നത്തെ കാലം ഇനി ഒരിക്കലും തിരിച്ചു വരാൻ പോകുന്നില്ല.  അർക്കളെ കൊട്ടതേ തെയ്യം മുടി എടുക്കുന്നത് വരെ ചന്ദ്രേട്ടനും ഞങ്ങൾ  കുറച്ചു പേര് അവിടത്തന്നെ ഉണ്ടാകും. അടുത്ത ദിവസം ഞങ്ങളുടെ ചാമണ്ടിയും ചന്ദ്രേട്ടന്റെ ഗുളികനും ഒക്കെ ഉണ്ടാകും. അതെല്ലാം നല്ല ഓർമ്മകൾ ആയിരുന്നു. അടുത്ത് തന്നെ എല്ലാവർക്കും ഒരുമിച്ഛ് കൂടാൻ സാധിക്കട്ടെ എന്ന് ഈശ്വരനോട് പ്രാർത്ഥിക്കാം.
ഞാനും ബാലകൃഷ്ണനും കൂടി പപ്പനെ മരത്തണ്ടിന്റെ മേലേ ഇരുത്തി നടന്നപ്പോൾ അവൻ താഴെ വീണ് എല്ലൊടിഞ്ഞിട്ട് അവനെയും കൂട്ടി കുഞ്ഞി വൈദ്യരടുത്തേക്കു രാഘവേട്ടനാണ് പോയത്  എന്നാണ് എന്റെ ഓർമ. എനിക്കും ബാലകൃഷ്ണനും അതിന്റെ പേരിൽ നല്ല അടിയും കിട്ടി. എന്തെല്ലാം   കഴിഞു പോയി.
എല്ലാവരും ചില സമയത്ത് പിശുക്ക് കാണിക്കാറുണ്ട്. സമ്പത്തിൽ, സന്തോഷത്തിൽ, സ്നേഹത്തിൽ ഇങ്ങനെ പോകുന്നു ലിസ്റ്റ്.
കുറച്ചു നാളുകളെ നാം ഈ ഭൂമിയിൽ കാണുകയുള്ളു. ഈ സമയം ഇതിനൊക്കെ പിശുക്ക് വേണമോ? വിട്ടു പോവാനുള്ളതാണ് ഈ ലോകത്തിൽ നിന്നും എല്ലാവരും. ചില കാര്യങ്ങളൊക്കെ മാറ്റിവയ്ക്കാം. സ്നേഹം ഉണ്ടെങ്കിൽ സന്തോഷവും ധനവും കൂടെ ഉണ്ടാകും. ചില വാശികൾ സ്വാർത്ഥതകൾ വിട്ടു കളയണം നാം.

1960 ക്യാപ്റ്റൻ AKN വീണ്ടും ജോലിയിൽ ഊട്ടി യിലേക് കുടുംബസമേതം പോയി. ഞാനും വേണുവും ബാലകൃഷ്ണനും അവിടേക്കു പോയ്‌. കണ്ണൂരിൽ നിന്ന് കോയമ്പത്തൂർ, അവിടെ നിന്ന് ട്രെയിനിൽ മേട്ടുപ്പാളയം, അവിടെ നിന്ന് narrowgagetrain to ഊട്ടി. ട്രെയനിൽ നിന്ന് മധുര പലഹാരങ്ങൾ കഴിച്ചു രണ്ടുപേരുടെയും മുഖം നിറച്ചും ഒട്ടി പിടിച്ചത്  മ സ്റ്റേഷനിൽ നിന്ന് കഴുകി  വൃത്തിയാക്കി  ശേഷമാണു മിലിറ്ററി ക്വാർട്ട്സിലേക്കു പോയത്
ഈ  ഊട്ടി  യാത്രയിൽ ട്രെയിനിൽ ഒരാളെ പരിചയപെട്ടു പേര് ശങ്കർ ഊട്ടിയിൽ മുൻസിഫാണ്. അയാളുടെ കല്യാണം അതെ ആഴ്ച്ച ഊട്ടിയിൽ വെച്ചാണ്ട്  അതിനു ക്ഷണിച്ചു. ഞാൻ പിയിരുന്നു. 1975 ഇൽ  ഞാൻ കോയമ്പത്തൂർ റെയിൽവേ സ്റ്റേഷനിൽ നിൽകുമ്പോൾ ഫുൾ സൂട്ടിൽ ശങ്കർ നില്കുന്നു കുറെ പോലീസ് കാരും  ഉണ്ടായിരുന്നു, ഞാൻ ശങ്കർ എന്നുവിളിച്ചപ്പോൾ എന്നെനോക്കി പറഞ്ഞു ആരാ എന്ന് ഞാൻ ഓര്മപുതുക്കി അപ്പോൾ ശങ്കർ പറഞ്ഞു ഞാൻ ഹൈക്കോടതി ജഡ്ജിയാണെന്നും കോയമ്പത്തൂരിൽ ഇൻസ്‌പെഷന് വന്നതാണെന്നും അതുകഴിഞ്ഞു എന്നെകെട്ടിപിടിച്ചു പറഞ്ഞു താങ്കളുടെ ഓർമശക്തി എന്നെ അത്ഭുതപെടുത്തിയെന്നും

Just a small correction... achan retired from army services in April 1960. After retirement, he was working as Manager of Excelsior Weaving company in Kulappuram.
In 1962 he was called back  to MRC Wellington  for a short period of 6 months.

This i an excellent idea. I still have Chandran velyachan's sketch of the school area saved. I think MCK family can write an excellent history of Naduvil in the 20th century like nobody else in the region can. I had mentioned this to Sreedharan velyachan once and he was excited about the prospects too. I'll be delighted to help compile it, once we have something solid! :)

Yes they are relatives. On that day Patteri Ambutty brought the liquor. On that day Ragava poduval was the guest.

Velyachan do you remember more about this incident?
One of achappan's closest friends was Chaveela Abdulla Haji who lived near to Puthiya veedu(our ancestral house).  There were only two Hajees in Naduvil circle during 50s. The other one was Kadungaan Hajee,  the businessman. An old Chaverlet van used to run single trip from  Naduvil to Taliparamba,  leaving Naduvil by 8 am and returning from Taliparamba market place at 5pm. Inside of van (except front seat which is reserved for achappan and/or Chaveela Haji) usually would be filled with sacks of pepper, cashew, etc.  and all passengers have to hang on the outside of the van including bonnet.
Are the Hajee families still in Naduvil?

No,  there was a renowned vaidyar,  named as Kalikkodan vaidyar. He used to treat for all sorts of illnesses. He was treating our achamma also for her paralysis illness. He used to prepare medicines at our house.  For this, achappan installed lots of equipment and chucks(for extracting oil from seeds) in the "olakkodu" and  north verandah of our house. I still remember people working though I was only 3 years old then.
Another one was "thaadikaran vaidyar" (Kunhiraman vaidyar) who stayed in the east side of Bhagavathi temple.
Ration shop was very prevalent during early 50s. Kalloor eleppan came to Naduvil as a ration shop manager in 1951 or so and later got married to Saradechi through arranged marriage.
Bank? There was nothing like a bank in Naduvil those days. In fact, usage lf solid currency was very rare. Wages were given in the form of "nellu" for workers. If I remember correctly, first bank was  "ഐക്യനാണയസംഘം " established in 1957.

Nalini is right.Most of the marriages  known as "Pudava kodukkal " were at night. The bridegroom and party used to stay in bride's house and would leave next day morning. Today's "Salkaram" was known as "Vettilakkettu" where bride's relatives/friends used to visit bridegroom's house. It could be many miles of walking by both parties to reach the respective houses.

Coins were in use as early as 18th century in India. But in remote places like Naduvil, it was very rarely used. 
Lowest coin - 1 kaasu
3 kaasu - 1 kaalana(quarter anna)
6 kaasu - 1/2 anna (half anna)
16 anna - 1 rupee
1 rupee was a big money then. You could buy provisions for 1 week for a 4  member family with 1 rupee.

Dear all,
I like to share the enchanting experience we had during  
Onam vacation during childhood. I remember the barren rocks of 'Kizhakkeppara' was swathed in dazzling blue  kakkapoo , a panoramic landscape created by God. The scintillating view of flowers like an ocean was an a dumbfounded experience. Plucking these flowers drenching ourselves in the incessant rain is still vividly  cherished in  memories. 
I think this open space once  supported the blue wonders of nature  Naduvilites spend their evenings , perhaps a non entity now due to ill planned and unplanned so called 'development'.
While taking the the krishapoo even the rain and wind had not bothered.Now feel that mood like meditation. Thinking of nothing else.
This was foot ball ground 
One end west was valiyettan (PTK)
Other end east was Balettan’s land - house was not made I think - all said once it was government / nss / open land - 
Now filled with office - Khasi - temple - many houses
The football ground was erstwhile a cricket ground also. When I was a teacher in Vyasa college I got cricket kit brought to Naduvil and distributed to cricket players. Vijayan staying near  Naliniyechi's house was a nice batsman.
Water spring and clean water used to flow in the ground and all collected used to be a nice stream down in front of valiyettan’s house 
Same was the water flow in the spring at rubber plantation at perunji  where I remember once had earth quake too !
my earliest memory related to naduvil is at puthiyaveedu. Achappan, achan, kalloor eleppan and some others were having a grand "party" at upstairs poomugham. I was playing near the stairs. Achan asked me to bring a glass from the kitchen. I was 6or7 years old. Just imagine having to go to kitchen through the dark cavernlike rooms. There was no electricity at that time there. I made a blind dash and ended up somewhere in the room near the kitchen with a big lump on my forehead  . 😃
Yes it was horrendous experience to go from one room to other when we were children.
Puthiyaveedu  upstair was a spacious lighted place unlike all other room !!
Same was my fascination for the round table around the pillar !!
There was a well in Balettan's land. In rainy season, water will come up &we used to jump into the well😂
Balettan sold this land to

I remember his second marriage was pudava type 
- I was there for that marriage !!

Very  interesting indeed ! These are all news to me hearing from my younger brothers and sisters.
I would concentrate on introducing many more characters of Naduvil with whom I had contact during  my young age. Some of you, I am sure,  may be knowing them.
Kelu Panikkar, the Gulikan theyyam expert of Arakkal kottam was a phenomenon. He was a very dedicated theyyam artist.
We (Sreedharan and me) used to wonder how he could travel to Taliparamba wearing only a mundu (മുണ്ട് ).
He also used to do MANTHRA to treat people

mundu used to have the madithattru - folded well and he keeps some item safe inside !! - I used to wonder - what is inside - one KNIFE always !!

How many of you know Raghavan (better known as
" Thondan Raghavan" ?
Raghavan appeared in Naduvil sometime during 1954. We came to know that he was from Kadamberi.  On  every trip to Naduvil he used to stay for 5-6 months and disappear.  He had no family  of his own. 
He was a wanderer.
He used to help in household jobs like pulling water from well,  griding rice in "Aattammi", cutting wood,  etc. When he was in Naduvil, we, the children,  used to play with him. We learned from him how to touch nose with our tongue. His nose was very long and he could easily do it,  but not so easy for us.
He is expert in making bed& pillow using cotton

We could give order and during the unnakkai season he makes it - may be hand stitching skill is part of theyyam !!

Pokkan was an inevitable part of our family machinery those days. Early morning we used to run to "Aala" with a small pot to collect milk for morning tea.There were about 25 over cows in the aala and at any time of the year,  3 to 5 cows were giving milk.
Latet Pokkan would bring full supply of milk in big bamboo containers. Milk was boiled in big mud 'kalam". After having breakfast, Pokkan would carry his lunch and would take the cows to "kizhakke parambu" for feeding grass. He would be back only by about 5 pm.
traditional ala had red stone laterite and so with Chanakam (cow dung) used to be wet with cow urine and as cow moves around used to get spill of the mix on to us as we enter inside !!

mostly the play used to be keeping shops and balance weighing is done using coconut shell with a rope hanging
Our Aala ( ആല ) on the way to  "Kakkopram"
Pocken for us was school peon and was old black and bit balled and always smiling - with Paru in the kitchen to make the UPMA out of the American ration wheat rave in Dalda - that was so tasty and good smell !!
I heard this rave was given to us and India used to give Printed books back in return to USA - these books are all shelfed in many libraries in USA (most of them are not available in India)

Amma told me that Pokkan was brought to kakkopram house by his mother. He was only 14 years old then. Achappan employed him as house helper and later as cowboy. He was given a piece of land near school and a small house was also constructed for him. Achappan was kind enough to even arrange the marriage of Pokkan with Paaru and later employed him as school peon.

Good to hear Raghavettan's old and golden memories.
It is hard to believe that the person in the photo is raghavettan. His looks have changed very much. But the cut on his right pointing finger made me believe it is raghavettan. For sreedharan and myself, raghavettan was  a mentor and caretaker. Raghavettan was all-in-all at puthiya veedu. You could hear people calling for raghavettan from all over the house for various jobs.

The first movie we saw was with raghavettan. It was in 1954,  the Malayalam movie was "Snehaseema" ( Sathyan and Padmini starrer movie).  We went for Trichambaram ulsavam and saw the movie at "Sunlight Talkies" (in the same location where Alankar talkies came later).
When I was studying in 5th St..one day when I was plucking cashews the pole stuck in my eye and began bleeding. Amma took me& run to Puthiya veedu .Raghavetten took me on his shoulder up to thettunna road (12km) caught a van to Taliparamba for treatment. 🙏🙏🙏

Raghavettan as I remember at  my young age..
Raghavettan was very special in all aspects. I remember him studying for his ESLC ( today's 8th class) by postal tution at home and  later for SSLC too. Through all the household jobs and urgent assignments given by achappan, he found time for learning, which, otherwise he could never have achieved. He was determined to suceed in life and he did to a great extent.

Did I get this correct?
Kesavan mash was mentioning about Sarvath Mammu. Sarvath was the main wholesale trader who used to buy spices, rubber, etc. from Naduvil and nearby placed. He was a close friend of MCK Nambiar and used to visit puthiya veedu very often during spice harvest days with his younger brother Abubacker. They had a big shop cum godown in market  place, Taliparamba. This shop was a resting/waiting place for MCK Nbr and kins.

Sarvath Brothers Bus-ൻടെ ഉടമയാണോ ?
The first bus towards our route was Indira Motors which made its service between Taliparamba and Chapparappadav. If I remember correctly, it was in 1957. Next came Sarvath Brothers bus from Taliparamba upto Oduvallithattu in 1958. Later this was extended to Naduvil for some time.
Though there are some mistakes 
Cheppilattu is where McK was 
Also Nayanar was not Janmi
Initially, I was mentioning about Karakkattidathil Unnamman Nayanar with whom achappan had a long legal fight about the ownership of Vellad dewaswam and temple. Finally, MCK Nbr won the case. To celebrate the victory, he replaced the tiles of Shreekovil of the temple with Copper plates.
PT K mostly used to mention his dealings - I remember this name
Cheppilattu was MCK's mother's house. He moved to Kakkepram house,  his father's ancestor property. Kunhechi (Sreedevi) was born in this house. After construction of Puthiya veedu in 1941,  kakkepram house was given to his half brother,   Rayarappan achappan.

It is still existing. The small shed   in between is the muslim barber shop. Except few,  most of the muslim males used to shave their heads those days.

Karakkattidathil Nayanars originated from Ellarinji,  about 10 kms south east of Sreekantapuram. The descendants are still there. Valiya Unnamman Nayanar was the last "Karanavar" before the land reformation bill got passed by Kerala Govt in 1959. It was the end of  "janmi - kudiyan" social structure.
As pappan mentioned,  Madayan Cheppilattu,  Pappinisseri and Pullaikkodi were all prominent Nair families of North Malabar. Alongside,  Koodali Thazhath and Kallyaad Thazhath were in fact ruling families even since Pazhassi rule time. All these families were  once "Samanthas" of Chirakkal king and were empowered with rights of maintaining law and order of their respective land limits before  British rule. 
I was told that Achappan's maternal great uncle was the leader of Nair army under Chirakkal king.

I think MCK family can write an excellent history of Naduvil in the 20th century like nobody else in the region can. Velyachan do you remember more about this incident?
One of achappan's closest friends was Chaveela Abdulla Haji who lived near to Puthiya veedu(our ancestral house).  There were only two Hajees in Naduvil circle during 50s. The other one was Kadungaan Hajee,  the businessman. An old Chaverlet van used to run single trip from  Naduvil to Taliparamba,  leaving Naduvil by 8 am and returning from Taliparamba market place at 5pm. Inside of van (except front seat which is reserved for achappan and/or Chaveela Haji) usually would be filled with sacks of pepper, cashew, etc.  and all passengers have to hang on the outside of the van including bonnet.
Are the Hajee families still in Naduvil?
Yes,  Harimon..... very much. These are beyond I can write on this page.

He was running the first ayurvedic medical store in his house.

No,  there was a renowned vaidyar,  named as Kalikkodan vaidyar. He used to treat for all sorts of illnesses. He was treating our achamma also for her paralysis illness. He used to prepare medicines at our house.  For this, achappan installed lots of equipment and chucks(for extracting oil from seeds) in the "olakkodu" and  north verandah of our house. I still remember people working though I was only 3 years old then.
Another one was "thaadikaran vaidyar" (Kunhiraman vaidyar) who stayed in the east side of Bhagavathi temple.
Ration shop was very prevalent during early 50s. Kalloor eleppan came to Naduvil as a ration shop manager in 1951 or so and later got married to Saradechi through arranged marriage.
Bank? There was nothing like a bank in Naduvil those days. In fact, usage lf solid currency was very rare. Wages were given in the form of "nellu" for workers. If I remember correctly, first bank was  "ഐക്യനാണയസംഘം " established in 1957.

Nalini is right.Most of the marriages  known as "Pudava kodukkal " were at night. The bridegroom and party used to stay in bride's house and would leave next day morning. Today's "Salkaram" was known as "Vettilakkettu" where bride's relatives/friends used to visit bridegroom's house. It could be many miles of walking by both parties to reach the respective houses.

Coins were in use as early as 18th century in India. But in remote places like Naduvil, it was very rarely used.
Lowest coin - 1 kaasu
3 kaasu - 1 kaalana(quarter anna)
6 kaasu - 1/2 anna (half anna)
16 anna - 1 rupee
1 rupee was a big money then. You could buy provisions for 1 week for a 4  member family with 1 rupee.

Dear all,
I like to share the enchanting experience we had during
Onam vacation during childhood. I remember the barren rocks of 'Kizhakkeppara' was swathed in dazzling blue  kakkapoo , a panoramic landscape created by God. The scintillating view of flowers like an ocean was an a dumbfounded experience. Plucking these flowers drenching ourselves in the incessant rain is still vividly  cherished in  memories.
I think this open space once  supported the blue wonders of nature  Naduvilites spend their evenings , perhaps a non entity now due to ill planned and unplanned so called 'development'.
While taking the the krishapoo even the rain and wind had not bothered.Now feel that mood like meditation. Thinking of nothing else.
This was foot ball ground
One end west was valiyettan (PTK)
Other end east was Balettan’s land - house was not made I think - all said once it was government / nss / open land -
Now filled with office - Khasi - temple - many houses
The football ground was erstwhile a cricket ground also. When I was a teacher in Vyasa college I got cricket kit brought to Naduvil and distributed to cricket players. Vijayan staying near  Naliniyechi's house was a nice batsman.
Water spring and clean water used to flow in the ground and all collected used to be a nice stream down in front of valiyettan’s house
Same was the water flow in the spring at rubber plantation at perunji  where I remember once had earth quake too !
my earliest memory related to naduvil is at puthiyaveedu. Achappan, achan, kalloor eleppan and some others were having a grand "party" at upstairs poomugham. I was playing near the stairs. Achan asked me to bring a glass from the kitchen. I was 6or7 years old. Just imagine having to go to kitchen through the dark cavernlike rooms. There was no electricity at that time there. I made a blind dash and ended up somewhere in the room near the kitchen with a big lump on my forehead  . 😃
Yes it was horrendous experience to go from one room to other when we were children.
Puthiyaveedu  upstair was a spacious lighted place unlike all other room !!
Same was my fascination for the round table around the pillar !!
There was a well in Balettan's land. In rainy season, water will come up &we used to jump into the well😂

I would concentrate on introducing many more characters of Naduvil with whom I had contact during  my young age. Some of you, I am sure,  may be knowing them.
Kelu Panikkar, the Gulikan theyyam expert of Arakkal kottam was a phenomenon. He was a very dedicated theyyam artist.
We (Sreedharan and me) used to wonder how he could travel to Taliparamba wearing only a mundu (മുണ്ട് ).
He also used to do MANTHRA to treat people

How many of you know Raghavan (better known as
" Thondan Raghavan" ?
Raghavan appeared in Naduvil sometime during 1954. We came to know that he was from Kadamberi.  On  every trip to Naduvil he used to stay for 5-6 months and disappear.  He had no family  of his own.
He was a wanderer.
He used to help in household jobs like pulling water from well,  griding rice in "Aattammi", cutting wood,  etc. When he was in Naduvil, we, the children,  used to play with him. We learned from him how to touch nose with our tongue. His nose was very long and he could easily do it,  but not so easy for us.
He is expert in making bed& pillow using cotton
